Networks of Pride: Creativity, Queerness, and Blackness
Discussion
1 hour 18 mins

New Art Exchange (Nottingham)
25 February 2021

To celebrate LGBTQIA+ History Month this February 2021, we are hosting an online panel discussion focused on creativity and queerness. Join the discussion with special guest speakers filmmaker Campbell X, poet AJ Awak-Essien, curator Candice Nembhard (okcandice) and writer Paula Akpan, chaired by Dr Hannah Robbins, Director of Black Studies at University of Nottingham.

In Sister Outsider, Audre Lorde writes: "We must recognize and nurture the creative parts of each other without always understanding what will be created." In this panel we will discuss the relationships between creativity, queerness, and Black-lived expression. We will explore issues of power and vitality as part of seeing many intersecting sides of queer Black creativity in Britain today.

Black Studies is the only programme of its kind in Europe and is steeped in interdisciplinary methods and critical reflection to investigate the roles, lives, cultures, politics, representations, activism, art, histories and movement of people of African descent.

SAVVY Film Series: Take XI with Candice Nembhard
SAVVY Contemporary (Berlin)
20 May 2020

For TAKE IX of our year-long, monthly film series RESIDING IN THE BORDERLANDS, we are joined by Candice Nembhard (okcandice) for a conversation on the films they selected, which are a testament to the strength and community that has been built by black queer practitioners in Berlin, both Afro-German and other diasporas.

Monthly film series RESIDING IN THE BORDERLANDS intends to create a cartography of Berlin through diasporic perspectives. As part of our diasporic place-making, we explore different film worlds, considering both the visual and auditory. Through the cinematic experience, we aspire to reach another way of being present, thinking of film as a means of movement that can also propel us into previously unthought of futures. The film screenings are followed by a discussion in which the guest locates themself within the city and talks about points of intersection with the different communities to which they belong.
